How to Find Underseen Films Using Letterboxd

A complete guide to using Letterboxd as a film discovery tool - the specific features for finding underseen films, the network strategies, and how to use the platform to build beyond the mainstream canon.

The films you're looking for are already on Letterboxd. They have been logged by other obsessive watchers, rated by people with taste, added to lists by people building their own curricula. The question is not whether the films are there - they are. The question is whether you're using the tool properly.

THE ALGORITHM PROBLEM

Netflix's recommendation algorithm surfaces the films most likely to generate your engagement, optimised for its business interests. Letterboxd doesn't have that problem - its recommendation functions are based on what your network has rated highly, not on what Letterboxd wants you to watch. But Letterboxd's default display logic still tends to surface popular films. The discovery strategies below work around this.

FOLLOWING THE RIGHT PEOPLE

The most effective Letterboxd discovery strategy is network curation. Follow people whose taste overlaps with yours in the films you've both seen and differs from yours in the films you haven't. The overlap establishes that their taste is calibrated to your territory; the difference is where the discoveries live.

How to find them: search for any film you love and look at the five-star reviews. The reviewer who gave five stars to that film and also has a full diary of films you haven't heard of is a follow candidate. Do this with five or six films that matter to you and you'll have built a discovery network of twenty to thirty people whose overlapping knowledge creates a map of what you haven't seen yet.

THE LIST FEATURE AS DISCOVERY ENGINE

Letterboxd lists are the most underused discovery feature on the platform. The right lists - curated by people who know what they're doing - will surface films that no algorithm would find for you. The search query to start with: your specific area of interest plus 'underseen' or 'hidden gems' or 'essential'. 'Underseen Japanese cinema 1970s', 'essential Hong Kong films not on best-of lists', 'Iranian cinema beyond Kiarostami'.

The Letterboxd lists that consistently surface good underseen films are the ones built by people with specific expertise and genuine curation standards - not the lists built from 'films I've seen' but the lists built from 'films I think are essential and most people haven't heard of.' These lists exist for every national cinema, every decade, every formal tradition.

THE FILMMAKER FILMOGRAPHY STRATEGY

Identify a filmmaker whose famous films you love and watch everything they made. The underseen films in any major director's catalogue are almost always at least as formally interesting as the canonical ones - they're underseen because they're less accessible or because they were overshadowed by a more successful film in the same year. The Kurosawa and Ozu catalogues both have films that are formally extraordinary and rarely discussed. Searching a filmmaker's Letterboxd page, sorting by 'your friends rated' or 'fewest ratings' finds them.

THE CREW THREAD STRATEGY

When you finish a film you love, check the Letterboxd page for the cinematographer, the editor, or the production designer rather than the director. These craft professionals often have worked on underseen films that never got the attention the director's more famous films received. Park Chan-wook's regular cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon shot The Wailing (Na Hong-jin, 2016) - not a Park film, but one of the great Korean horror thrillers, and the credit connection surfaces it.

THE SPECIFIC SEARCH STRATEGIES

Decade filter plus country plus sort by 'fewest ratings with minimum 4 stars': this surfaces films in a specific tradition that have been well-received by the people who've seen them but haven't been seen by many people yet. The high average rating with low view count is the signal. Narrow to decades and countries you're specifically building knowledge in.

The Required Watching Letterboxd lists - available on the platform - are built specifically to surface the underseen films in the CJK tradition and the world cinema traditions that mainstream platform algorithms don't find. Subscribe to the lists, track what you've seen, and use the unseen items as your discovery queue.
