Getting Married Is an Ableist Privilege. Patrice: The Movie Proved It to Me.

I caught Patrice: The Movie at the London Film Festival. It's about a disabled couple — Patrice and Gary — who want to get married but can't. Not because they don't love each other. Because the benefits system in the UK penalises two disabled people for formalising that love. That GoFundMe she did for a car? Got her taxed on the donations. Cost her benefits. She has two jobs. This is real.

This documentary finds joy and absurdity and genuine fury in that system — all at once. It's the kind of film that rearranges something in you without announcing that's what it's doing.
