Welcome to Required Watching, where we watch the essential films from the lists of cinematic influencers and break them down through the lens of learning about filmmaking and how to move forward.
Today we’re talking about a documentary that shook the industry: The Problem with Apu, directed by comedian Hari Kondabolu. This film sparked massive conversations about representation, racial stereotypes, and the responsibility storytellers have — whether we mean to or not.
In this episode, I explore:
• Why Apu became a cultural flashpoint
• How the documentary reframed representation for South Asian creatives
• What filmmakers can learn about stereotypes, casting, and even voice acting
• Why media can unintentionally cause harm — and how it can also push the culture forward
• The responsibility we carry when creating characters, worlds, and jokes
This is one of those rare documentaries that didn’t just shine a light — it actually changed things. Hank Azaria stepped down. Hollywood started paying attention. Audiences pushed for better.
And honestly? As a Black filmmaker, the parallels hit hard. We all know what it feels like to be flattened into a caricature. That’s why films like this matter.
